Are we driving through Utah? I really need to look at a map! If we are, Bryce Canyon has been recommended by a couple of friends. Here is the website--boys, check out the kids link:

http://www.nps.gov/brca/index.html

If we have time, it sounds like a fun day stop.

Now, I know that we will be in Nevada! Red Rock Canyon sounds like a lot of fun. It's a 13 mile windy drive through a scenic canyon with stops for hiking along the way. We can sign up for guided hikes for a levels (even less than a mile!) or make our own way. At least 2 people talked to me about this canyon. Here's the link:

Hi Powells!

Here is something to think about:

Rainbow Trout Farm
3500 North Highway 89A
Sedona, AZ 86336
(928) 282-5799

I couldn't find an actual link to the farm, but here is a link to a place to stay in Sedona that mentions it:

http://www.swinn.com/things_to_do.html

This farm comes highly recommended by a friend; however, in all fairness, I must mention that I did read a horrible review of it on a website. Let's discuss.

South vs. North

Don't get confused by the title of this post. It's not about the Civil War. It's about location. For all y'all following along, I thought I'd clear up one misconception. The south rim is the closest rim to Vegas, so that's where I originally planned to head. As a matter of fact, I've booked a lodge that's operated by the National Park service that's less than a half mile from the rim called Yavapai Lodge.

There were only five rooms left in all the lodges listed as operated on Park property, and we got one. The problem? No AC! Only vaulted ceilings with fans.

Gotta' run. I'll edit this later.

I spoke with a colleague today, and she gave me a plethora of information about the Grand Canyon. Her family went last year, so she has some great and interesting thoughts. She highly suggests that we only spend one day at the North Rim and then make the drive to check out the South Rim. The South Rim reportedly has many more things to do and many more choices for lodging. One thing that she recommended was putting the kids in a day program in which they can hike, explore and do "kid things." Haley, Dorian, and Devin--please let us know how you feel about that. Checking out both rims would add to our enjoyment and would allow us to compare and contrast the Grand Canyon areas.

Hey, the server won't let me post comments so is it possible for you to bear with me?

Grand Canyon Attractions

Hey,

I've got a few suggestions for some attractions at the Grand Canyon. First off, why don't we do some cavern exploring? I think it would be fascinating to observe the limestone caverns in the Grand Canyon. Another idea I have is to get some good sunrise/sunset times. It would provide a spectacular view. I think we can get a good view of the sunrise at the Desert View Watchtower. I'm not quite certain of how to make reservations, but the link I used to gather this information was http://www.nps.gov/grca/. Also, we could probably try to reserve horseback riding.

Info on where we are going.

I have been doing some searching on the "Bright Angel" trail and I got a map on what course it takes.http://www.kaibab.org/usgs/gc_gc_ec.htm#map_top. We are going to be doing all of that trail at the URL. If you want to know more info on the "Bright Angel" trail then look at this URL.http://www.kaibab.org/bc/gc_tr_ba.htm. We are also going to be visiting the Hoover Dam and this is some info on it. http://www.arizona-leisure.com/hoover-dam.html.

We Need Your Ideas

Ok everybody. If you're here, you were probably invited. And that means that you know that we'll be heading for Las Vegas on 6/30/2006 with the intention of visiting the Grand Canyon.

I know Vegas isn't the family friendly destination that the Las Vegas tourist council has been trying to hype it as, but Vegas is, relatively speaking, cheap to fly into and only two tanks of rental minivan gas away from the canyon with the benefit of being able to stop at the Hoover Dam on the way.

Now since we're going to be in Vegas anyway, and since we'll likely not be that way again, we've decided to check it out. A coupla' fun things we're considering are Star Trek: The Experience and the Stratosphere Tower. And if Tracy and I can find a kids program for the boys, we'll probably catch a show one night.

After spending all weekend in Vegas, we're on the road to the Grand Canyon. Thank goodness for Mapquest. We expect to make it (with a stop at the Hoover Dam) in about six to seven hours.

I've already had Miles from the YMCA turn me onto the "Bright Angel" trail. I still have to Google this, but apparently it's a very well kept trail that descends a mile in depth over the course of five miles. Miles is an avid hiker and a good source of good hiking advice that I would never have thought of. He advised me to buy padded socks and to trim toe nails for the journey (apparently there's a condition known as "black nail" that you get when your nails are too long and you walk down a slope for an extended period).

We'll have large hats, plenty of water, and have begun training all the boys' cardiovascular systems while strengthening their legs. We're taking this adventure seriously!!

You've heard our ideas, but you know we're not world travelers. We're reaching out to you, our friends and family, to share your experiences in your comments so we can maximize our adventuring opportunity.

We plan on posting our ideas and plans up untill we leave, and we'll bring lots of pics back to post for everyone's viewing pleasure. If I bring the laptop, have internet service, and am not collapsing at 7PM every night, I'll also post pics and posts along the way.

So please do visit here often. We're looking to share our excitement and to have you share your experiences too!
